NECA contractors will discuss the energy storage market and their challenges and successes in this rapidly growing, diverse field. Get a better understanding of how installations of UPS and conventional battery backup systems give you an advantage in this multi-billion dollar industry that ranges from small commercial to utility scale systems. Hear what our contractor panelists have learned along the way, tips on how they succeeded and what your company can do to replicate their success.

  • Bernie Kotlier

    Bernie Kotlier directs the development, promotion, and delivery of sustainable energy training for IBEW electricians, and business development programs for NECA electrical contractors in California and Nevada including energy auditing, energy efficiency, photovoltaics, zero net energy buildings, electric vehicles, energy storage, and micro-grids. Bernie has served on a number of advisory committees to the California Public Utilities Commission, and is currently co-chair of the California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program, national co-chair of the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program / EVITP, co-founder of the Energy Storage and Microgrid Training and Certification Initiative, and a member of the boards of directors of the California Clean Energy Fund / CalCEF, CalCharge, and the National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Batteries / NAATBatt International.

  • Dan Cohee

    Dan leads the design, implementation, integration and construction of advanced energy storage and distributed generation projects for Morrow-Meadows Corporation.  Prior to Morrow-Meadows’ acquisition of PDE Total Energy Solutions, Dan led the PDE team on leading-edge work, including an off-grid energy storage system supporting a 1MW solar installation and desalinization reverse osmosis plant, which produced over 250k gallons of fresh water daily, utilizing 100% renewable energy.

    Dan acted as Principal Investigator at PDE’s Battery Energy Storage project at 29 Palms Marine Corps Base and microgrid projects at Port Hueneme Naval Base.  Dan also led teams on the Smart Microgrid Project, and Net Zero Energy project at the Los Angeles IBEW/NECA Electrical Training Institute, a 144k square Net Zero Plus foot retrofit, which featured a microgrid, battery energy storage, advanced control systems and energy efficiency measures.

  • Joseph B. Marrone, Jr

    Joseph B. Marrone, Jr. serves as Vice President of construction for Miller Brothers. Joe has a passion for large power / utility construction and 15 years of experience in the utility, industrial/commercial, transit, mechanical and renewables industry.

    Joe has extensive experience in estimating, project team management, labor management, and material procurement. His work overseeing all phases of projects has enabled Joe’s teams to bring a project from concept, through coordination, design, planning and construction, to successful completion.

    Joe is particularly interested in this NECA convention energy storage panel because of his work on the SEPTA transit battery energy storage project, as well as other energy storage and microgrid jobs.
